Farmhouse Interior Design Tips

It doesn’t matter what style of home you are currently in, you might have a love for the rustic style that is associated with the farmhouse.

Farmhouse chic has been around for years and can be one of the most relaxing and enjoyable interiors to have in the home.

Farmhouse interiors have the feeling of an older home, things are a little less shiny and new, and it feels welcoming, and a little lived in.

Thankfully, you don’t need to hunt high and low for authentic furnishings from a farm; many modern brands produce replicas – or farm-style wares.

Here are a few tips that can help you create a farmhouse vibe.

Open plan

Open plan is something we often see in modern new–built homes, which makes them ideal for creating an open-concept farmhouse.

Traditionally farmhouse rooms are usually multiple purposes and used by all the family. Creating an open concept room means having both living and dining room (or other) furniture within the same space.

Rather than filling up the space with many things, stick with the essential items like coffee tables, chairs, and comfort.

Try to let in a lot of light to keep the room feeling airy and bright.

Farmhouse Interior Design Tips

Neutrals

The right shade of wallpaper or paint can make a huge difference in how the room feels. Typically modern interiors will have white or bright bold colors.

To make sure our homes are attractive to others, we often set aside what we want. However, when you aim to create something beautiful with a farmhouse, feel neutrals are your best friend.

Neutrals with subtle tones like green, blue and yellow can give you a relaxed and beautiful feel to a room.

Wood

One of the most commonly used materials in a farmhouse or a country cottage is wood. Exposed beams, wooden floors, and wooden furniture is par for the course.

Wooden furniture, in particular, is a simple way to create that rustic sensibility, but it is always worth looking at if it “feels” right in your home environment. When buying furniture, you can use online design centers to get a better insight into if it looks at home.

Replacing your flooring might be costly, but installing rustic woven rugs can help you get the homely farmhouse feel.

Don’t worry too much if you don’t have exposed wooden beams, don’t worry too much. There are plenty of other ways to add wooden elements to your home.

And, as an extra tip: if you can’t stretch your budget for purchasing authentic and reclaimed items, almost all new pine and other wood items can be distressed to make them look older. Or stain to give them the appearance of dark wood.

Doors

It is the details that really bring the look together, and something that is not only a beautiful feature – but can make a huge visual difference is barn doors—specifically sliding barn doors. Sliding barn doors can be great space savers depending on the style of your home and come in a wide range of styles – so there is going to be something for you.

Open shelving

One of the most distinguishing features of many rustic farms and cottages is their beautiful open shelving. The open shelving usually displays plates, side plates, bowls, or it can be for things like laundry supplies.

One thing is for sure, the open shelving makes finding what you need quick and easy – and encourages you to stay well organized.

Old-style open shelving isn’t too difficult to come by, but you can also find newer options that have the same look.

Mod-cons

Modern conveniences might feel like they simply don’t fit with the look and feel that you are trying to create. However, for every style of the home interior, there are plenty of options.

For the farmhouse look, distressed styles of ceiling fan, the modern but rustic-looking light fittings with wires dangling from large pieces of wood, and retro bulbs can all add to your look.

Art

The artwork you choose to adorn your walls with can have a huge overall impact on the vibe of your space. The farmhouse style often has an eclectic mix of styles, and that is part of what makes it so interesting to look at.

Often it will be signs with a gentle reminder to be in the moment and enjoy family time, mixed with wrought iron items like spoons and painted images of oversized animals. But ultimately you can choose whatever makes you happy.

Dining table

Perhaps the heart of a farmhouse home is the table and chairs. Of course, they should be wooden, but you can mix and match the chairs. They’ll look like they were collected over time rather than a single set.

You can carry the look on throughout your home and into the kitchen too. Here are some great tips: Choose the Right Kitchen Cabinets For Your Home.
