To be honest, when our book club chose “Where The Crawdads Sing” by Delia Owens, I didn’t race out to get the book. For truly unknown reasons, (may have been the book cover?) I was uninspired by the choice. Reluctantly, I picked up a copy. Mainly because I didn’t want to be the one at book club that month who didn’t read the book.
Not surprisingly, like over 15 million other readers who have purchased the book, I wound up enjoying the engaging fictional tale of the “Marsh Girl”. The elements of nature woven throughout the heart-breaking, yet triumphant tale are brilliant companions to Kya as she comes of age.
Yet, I don’t think I completely saw the heart and vision of this gifted story until I saw it come to life at the theater. The talented actors, stunning visuals, and amazing film crew took WHERE THE CRAWDADS SING to a compelling new level. This is one time where I have to say, the movie is comparatively on the same captivating level as the book.
Though, yes, some things are modified from book to screen, there is spectacularly great art to be found in both renditions.
Now that WHERE THE CRAWDADS SING is available on digital, Blu-Ray, and DVD with bonus content, it’s the perfect time to plan a book club movie night!

Don’t you just love finding a great excuse for planning a movie’ night? Thanks to my partnership with Sony Pictures Home Entertainment, I’ve had the chance to view the Blu-Ray + DVD + Digital copies of WHERE THE CRAWDADS SING. It’s just as mesmeric as the first time I viewed the film.
Whether you’ve read the book for book club or not, it’s the perfect movie to sit down and enjoy with your book besties. Grab a copy and make plans to watch it at home this weekend! The release includes excellent bonus content, like the making of the film, deleted and extended scenes, and an indepth look at the incredible women both onscreen and behind the scenes.
Every memorable movie night in requires a little bit of planning, but with a stellar movie like WHERE THE CRAWDADS SING and a few tasty snacks, you can easily have everyone over for an impromptu evening. Simply choose your venue, plan your snacks and send out the invites.
Think about ways to stage the gathering. Will you hang out in the family room or spend time on your patio deck? If you have an outdoor screen, this would be a great film to watch outside. The ambiance is perfect!
Keep things simple with some tea, natural sodas or a few bottles of organic wine. Or toss a themed drink into the mix that complements the film. A Blue Bayou cocktail would be a fun match.
Purchase pre-made snacks that everyone loves for movie-watching like popcorn, chocolate, candy and chips. If you like to have farm fresh, healthier options on-hand (like I do,) then you can easily find inspiration from WHERE THE CRAWDADS SING. Kya receives packets of seeds (at one point in the film) making fresh veggies and dip a great choice.
If you want to take things a step further, give everyone a journal and some sketch pens. (You can pick these up at the local dollar store). Encourage your book club crew to take notes on the film or sketch their favorite bits of nature. Or you could have everyone plant seeds and paint clay pots as a themed-activity.
No matter how elaborate or simple you want to plan out the night, the film and the company of your book club friends are truly the stars, so everything else is just a lovely extra.
