Care for your Linen by the Season

The easiest way to know when it’s time to change up the bedding is to take advantage of the seasons. Spring cleaning is a great time of year to get those linens out into some fresh air! Take all of your bedding out of storage, give it a nice wash, and hang it on the line for a fresh scent. When summer is over, wash all of the linens and store them (more on that in a bit). Then bring out the heavier blankets and comforters from storage, give them a fluff in the dryer with a dryer sheet and put them on the beds!

Look at your bedding really well. Are the seams still good? Is it wearing too thin? Are there any holes or tears? Are the buttons on your duvet cover loose? If something isn’t right, either fix it, have it fixed, or throw it out. Take note of your other linens too. Is there something in your linen closet from 1985? If it has no sentimental value, get rid of it. You can only use one set of sheets on a bed at a time. You really don’t need more than two, and if you have more than that, it should be because you’re in love with it.

Find a Storage Solution

Storage really depends on your preference and space constraints. Many people like to use vacuum-sealed space saver bags. They’re airtight, water tight, bug-proof (all it takes is one moth in a closet to ruin a blanket!), and they save space. They work for just about everyone and are well worth the investment, especially if you find them on sale. If you have a lot of room for storage, plastic totes work well also, as long as the lids shut tight. You don’t want anything getting in. Worst case storage scenario? Use the bag the linens came in. Many of them come in zippered plastic bags. They’re better than nothing, but do try to find a better solution since the object here is to upgrade and preserve your stuff.

Maintain and Update Your Bedroom Linens

Now that you’ve got the old stuff put away, what are you going to buy new? You’ll want to pick up something that will match everything you already have as well as suit the season.  You’ll also want to choose quality pieces, like Saatva Dreams Lofton 100% organic cotton sheets.  This way you are making an investment that will continue to bring you joy throughout the years, without needing constant care or replacements.

If you’re looking to upgrade your summer bedding, don’t buy a flannel sheet set, even if it does have daisies on it. Summer linens should be light and breathable, where winter linens need to be heavier. You might also find that buying flannel sheets in the summer months is better because they’re less expensive. You can find some really great deals that way!

You don’t have to buy a brand new $300 comforter every year. You can get away with a duvet cover on sale, a new set of sheets that you picked up at a thrift store for 50 cents, or even new pillowcases found on clearance. If you take care of them properly, you’ll have a nice bedding collection in just a little bit of time.

Most importantly, have fun with it! Sprucing up your home’s décor is supposed to be fun. If you’re getting upset because you can’t find what you want, then let it go. As long as it’s clean and comfortable, updating your bedding can always skip a season.
