Unless you live under a cinema rock, by now you’ve heard the buzz about the next movie installment in the Marvel Avenger series AVENGERS: AGE OF ULTRON. While you are surely excited to get a screen full of eye candy, amazing action and to-die-laughing for one-liners, you may also be asking “what exactly is the ‘Age of Ultron’?”
No worries, I had same initial reaction. Despite having read a wealth of comic books in my day, there’s so much to the Marvel universe that you simply cannot be up-to-date on every aspect. So, before you watch the special look at AVENGERS: AGE OF ULTRON below, here’s the quick scoop on Ultron:
Ultron is a supervillian in the Marvel Comics universe. He’s an AI (artificial intelligence) created by
Dr. Henry Jonathan “Hank” Pym, a genius scientist who is otherwise known as the Marvel superhero Ant Man. In comic books, Ultron’s main foes are the Avengers.
As far as powers go, Ultron has an arsenal! His armor is comprised mainly of adamantium (if you are a Wolverine fan, you’ll recognize this as the same metal that Wolverine has bonded to his skeletal frame,) he’s super-strong, fast, has the ability to control other machines (robots, computers and so on,) is equipped with an array of weapons including a ray that can hypnotize victims or at worst place them in a coma, and he’s a genius strategist. In a nut-shell, one tricky, complex and extremely dangerous opponent.
The “Age of Ultron” is the name of a comic book series Marvel published in which Ultron and his mission to take over (rule) earth is the main component.
Marvel will surely have to make some adaptations to Ultron’s persona and story-line to adapt to the constraints of a two-plus-hour-film, but I expect they’ll stay as true as possible to the spirit of the supervillian as they’ve typically done with other characters in recent Marvel films. Take a peek for yourself and see what you think!
Marvel Studios presents “Avengers: Age of Ultron,” the epic follow-up to the biggest Super Hero movie of all time. When Tony Stark tries to jumpstart a dormant peacekeeping program, things go awry and Earth’s Mightiest Heroes, including Iron Man, Captain America, Thor, The Incredible Hulk, Black Widow and Hawkeye, are put to the ultimate test as the fate of the planet hangs in the balance. As the villainous Ultron emerges, it is up to The Avengers to stop him from enacting his terrible plans, and soon uneasy alliances and unexpected action pave the way for an epic and unique global adventure.
Marvel’s “Avengers: Age of Ultron” stars Robert Downey Jr., who returns as Iron Man, along with Chris Evans as Captain America, Chris Hemsworth as Thor and Mark Ruffalo as The Hulk. Together with Scarlett Johansson as Black Widow and Jeremy Renner as Hawkeye, and with the additional support of Samuel L. Jackson as Nick Fury and Cobie Smulders as Agent Maria Hill, the team must reassemble to defeat James Spader as Ultron, a terrifying technological villain hell-bent on human extinction. Along the way, they confront two mysterious and powerful newcomers, Wanda Maximoff, played by Elizabeth Olsen, and Pietro Maximoff, played by Aaron Taylor-Johnson, and meet an old friend in a new form when Paul Bettany becomes Vision. Written and directed by Joss Whedon and produced by Kevin Feige, Marvel’s “Avengers: Age of Ultron” is based on the ever-popular Marvel comic book series “The Avengers,” first published in 1963. Get set for an action-packed thrill ride when The Avengers return in Marvel’s “Avengers: Age of Ultron” on May 1, 2105.
