In our family, life is centered around the kitchen.  It’s our central hub of activity as crops are brought in from the garden, herbs are dried on the windowsill and daily joys and pitfalls are discussed fervently while culinary creations take shape for suppertime.

J.R.R. Tolkien once said, “If more of us valued food and cheer and song above hoarded gold, it would be a merrier world.”

This sentiment is the crux of the novel now turned screenplay, THE HUNDRED FOOT JOURNEY.  Food plays a significant role in this clash of cultures, weaving its magic and ability to connect souls who might otherwise never come together, if it were not for the lure of a magnificent meal.  Food certainly has to ability to connect all of us on a very human level.

Thanks to our friends at DreamWorks Pictures, we have the opportunity to introduce you to THE HUNDRED FOOT JOURNEY with a delightful recipe straight from the reel of the upcoming film.  Enjoy this Beef Bourguinon a la Hassan and use it to create a little serendipity in your kitchen!

In “The Hundred-Foot Journey,” Hassan Kadam (Manish Dayal) is a culinary ingénue with the gastronomic equivalent of perfect pitch. Displaced from their native India, the Kadam family, led by Papa (Om Puri), settles in the quaint village of Saint-Antonin-Noble-Val in the south of France. Filled with charm, it is both picturesque and elegant – the ideal place to settle down and open an Indian restaurant, the Maison Mumbai. That is, until the chilly chef proprietress of Le Saule Pleureur, a Michelin starred, classical French restaurant run by Madame Mallory (Academy Award®-winner Helen Mirren), gets wind of it.

Her icy protests against the new Indian restaurant a hundred feet from her own, escalate to all out war between the two establishments – until Hassan’s passion for French haute cuisine and for Mme. Mallory’s enchanting sous chef, Marguerite (Charlotte Le Bon), combine with his mysteriously delicious talent to weave magic between their two cultures and imbue Saint-Antonin with the flavors of life that even Mme. Mallory cannot ignore. At first Mme. Mallory’s culinary rival, she eventually recognizes Hassan’s gift as a chef and takes him under her wing.

I think I’d love any movie with Helen Mirren in it, she is just awesome- so thank you for sharing her latest role with us. And the Beef Bourguinon recipe looks and sounds decadent with bacon and Chanterelle mushrooms.
