My grandmother’s church had a corral of miniature ponies on the property. They were rescued by the congregation from an abusive home and became beloved mascots. As a child, I had very little encounters with wildlife, other than our family dog, before I met those beautiful ponies. To the eyes of a 7-year-old, they were simply magical and magnificent!
Like the young boy in The Journey Home, I quickly formed a bond with those beautiful ponies, visiting and chatting with them each Sunday I accompanied my grandmother to church. I would have certainly gone to the extreme means, as the congregation did, to ensure they were well cared for. The experience taught me such a value life lesson about respect for all of God’s creatures. Even now, I rejoice in knowing I played a small part in their comfort, feeding them carrots and apples after mass and wishing them all the love a little girl’s heart can muster.
