Handy Tips to Organize and Declutter Your Garage

For many, the garage is the place to store things that do not have a proper place in the home, along with their personal vehicles. Here are some ways you can prevent clutter and free up additional space in your garage so that there is room for more than your car.

Get Rid of the Junk

Chances are, after months or even years of storing things in the garage, you may not have a need for everything that is in there. You might not be able to recollect what all you have stored in there. The first step to decluttering the garage is to get rid of the junk. Once the junk is removed, you will be able to better visualize how to organize your garage.

Zone the Garage

The garage has a lot of space, and when it is sectioned off, you will discover that there is more room available for other uses. Designate an area for the car and zone the rest of the garage for storage, workspace, and other uses.

Shelves, Carts, and J Hooks

The best way to store everything is to give it a proper place. Use J hooks to free up some floor space and hang up even your heavier items, such as tools, bikes, and storage bins. Place any items that are too large for hanging in storage bins on tables and shelves.

Cabinets

If you have children and pets, the garage is a good place to store any hazardous and dangerous chemicals and tools. Place any harmful substances and tools in a locking cabinet in the garage. Limit access to the garage to further protect your pets and children from gaining access to the cabinet.

Ongoing Maintenance

Without the use of storage solutions such as J hooks, shelves, and cabinets, your garage could easily become the perfect breeding ground for junk and pests. Make it a habit to organize your garage every few months to keep it from accumulating junk and to put things back in their proper places after each use. And if you’re feeling crafty know that there is always the DIY approach that could be a fun way to reclaim your space.
