Will You Pass The Purple Purse With Me?

Purple Purse
October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month and I feel it’s important to offer my voice for this important initiative. This post is part of a sponsored campaign with The Allstate Foundation and MomSelect.
All thoughts and opinions are my own.

In the late 80’s, I thought I’d met the love of my life.  Turned out, in my young nativity, I couldn’t have been further from the truth and unwittingly wound up as a victim of domestic violence.

It’s still a bit difficult to discuss, even after two decades have passed. The reality is, no one ever thinks it will happen to them.  And when it does, we somehow feel it’s our fault or that we should be ashamed we allowed it to happen, or worse, that we allowed it to continue.

Did you know that domestic violence affects one in four women in their lifetime? What a staggering statistic!  Turns out, that’s more women than breast cancer, ovarian cancer and lung cancer combined.
But, would you know how to help a victim of domestic violence?  Even as a survivor of domestic violence, I struggle with how to best support friends, neighbors or family members who are victimized.

There’s no doubt that domestic violence is difficult to talk about and take action on.  When I found an amazing program that addresses this important issue and makes it easy for us to lend our support, I’m certainly jumping on the chance to share it with you and to make a difference in the lives of those who are living in constant fear.  Our friends at The Allstate Foundation are helping to give a voice to this issue with the Purple Purse campaign.

Purple Purse, The Allstate Foundation’s symbol for domestic violence, proudly represents a woman’s way to escape the cycle of abuse by gaining financial independence. Now in its third year, The Allstate Foundation’s Purple Purse campaign has pledged to donate up to $350,000 to the YWCA for programs designed at assisting survivors of domestic violence and other women in need.

More than 1,000 purses are being distributed, containing domestic violence information, and I’m proud to have a purple purse to pass to you today along with residents in my area.  Will you please help me pass it along?

For every purple purse passed through the end of October, The Allstate Foundation will donate $5 to YWCA. You can pass my virtual purple purse by logging onto Facebook.com/PurplePurse or www.purplepurse.com and entering the code 01370.

That’s it, easy-peasy, takes a few seconds of your day to make a significant difference in raising awareness and helping victims of domestic violence.

Your efforts can have even greater impact, too, as each time a virtual purple purse is shared or re-shared, The Allstate Foundation will make a $5 donation to YWCA.

Please pass the Purple Purse with me today.  Enter code 01370 at Facebook.com/PurplePurse or www.purplepurse.com.  Together we can help chance the statistics and empower others to break free of the domestic violence cycle.

I have so many friends who have suffered through domestic violence and have always tried to help them but often don’t know how. I love that this campaign is raising awareness.

Every situation is so different and it’s very difficult to know what to do. Thanks for your support, Pam, this is a measure we can all easily take to help raise awareness and provide that help we often wished we could!

I love this.. thanks for sharing and spreading this cause… Sooo glad that people are finally talking and helping… It took me 10 years to get out and I have physical and emotional scares left, BUT I’m out… I still get some of the verbal abuse, BUT I decide to hang up the phone… There is a choice… Thanks soo much 🙂

I’m so proud of you Melanie! We are survivors and telling your story, I’m sure, will help empower others! Good for you, too, for setting your limits and hanging up the phone! You are a beautiful person and worth so much more!

I actually participated in this campaign and it is really an important one. There are so many women who are suffering in silence due to the fear of bringing up a taboo subject in order to try to get some help.
